Alpha Sigma Mu Scholarship Winner


Congratulations to Jonathan A. Bock, the winner of the 2009-2010 Richard G. Connell, Jr. Undergraduate Scholarship. Jonathan is a Ceramic Engineering Major at Missouri University of Science and Technology where he has been active in several material science and engineering student groups, including Material Advantage and Keramos. He will receive the $1,500 award at the Alpha Sigma Mu General Body Meeting to be held on October 26, 2009 during the MS&T Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

The Cal Poly, SLO Alpha Sigma Mu chapter holds an annual Spring Banquet for the entire Materials Engineering department. AΣM initiates do fund raising for the event, such as fabricating and selling NiTi shape memory alloys. The free event is a highly anticipated and fun-filled event that allows students, faculty, and staff to gather for a nice dinner at a local restaurant. The highlight of the banquet is the skits performed by the students, faculty, and new AΣM members.

Drexel Revives Alpha Sigma Mu Chapter and Inducts New Members
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University has revived its Alpha Sigma Mu Chapter, known as Pennsylvania Alpha, with the induction of five students in a ceremony on June 9, 2009.

The Alpha Sigma Mu Distinguished Life Member award is granted to an individual who has served the materials community and/or Alpha Sigma Mu over a long career and shall have established an international recognition for his/her service. The award is conferred upon those select few whose technical attainment and contributions to society through leadership in the field of materials science and engineering have resulted in significant benefits to mankind. The award is Alpha Sigma Mu’s highest honor.

The Alpha Sigma Mu Fellow award is granted to professionals from the materials community who are in the middle of their careers and have distinguished themselves in industry, government, education and management and/or service to Alpha Sigma Mu over a long period of time. This is a new award from Alpha Sigma Mu.

The 2009 Alpha Sigma Mu Lecture and Awards Presentation will be made on:
Monday, October 26, 2009 from 3-4pm est, David Lawrence Convention Center, Pittsburgh, PA.
 
(Dr. Knight received his award at the Pennsylvania Alpha Chapter of Alpha Sigma Mu at Drexel University on May 1st from Board Member, Dr. Fred Schmidt.)
 
Dr. Fred E. Schmidt, Technical Director, Materials Engineering, Engineering Systems Inc., has been appointed to be Vice President-Alpha Sigma Mu International Honorary Society by Dr. Jack G. Simon, President. 
 
Dr. Schmidt will assume the office of President in 2011 when President Simon moves to Past President.
