Regular Member: Students/Grad Students
Regular Membership for students is by invitation only to the top 25% of juniors and seniors/grad students. Membership is much more than a line on a resume. If you choose to accept this once-in-a-lifetime offer, you will join a select community of top materials scholars and professionals and gain access to resources and benefits designed to serve your academic and professional needs.
Material Advantage Faculty Advisors will use their existing Chapters to recommend students for membership using the Online Member Recommendation Form (www.alphasigmamu.org) and secure their $50 membership dues and send application and membership fee to Alpha Sigma Mu Secretary/Treasurer. Faculty advisors at Sections and Chapters at MRS, SPE, ACerS, and SAMPE will follow the same procedure as used by Material Advantage Faculty Advisors.
It is the intent of Alpha Sigma Mu to honor the top quarter of the junior class at accredited universities with Materials Science & Engineering programs for Regular membership in Alpha Sigma Mu. Furthermore it is our intention that seniors be extended the honor of regular membership in their senior year if they were either not eligible in their junior year or did not accept membership at that time.
Graduate Students
Graduate students are encouraged to become members of Alpha Sigma Mu. They have the right to hold office, serve on committees, and actively participate in chapter activities. They are to be recommended by Faculty Advisors at their respective universities.
Faculty
All faculty of the Materials Science and Engineering Departments and related materials fields such as composites, polymer composites, glass and ceramics, metals, electronic materials, medical devices, nanocomposites and newly emerging materials with the rank of Assistant Professor or higher should be considered for Alpha Sigma Mu Regular membership. Their position automatically qualifies them for membership, and your chapter will be stronger if all such faculty are Alpha Sigma Mu members. Faculty shall be recommended for Regular Membership following the procedure outlined on our website.
