ANNOUNCING the ALPHA SIGMA MU SCHOLARSHIP The Alpha Sigma Mu scholarship is intended to recognize superior academic performance of a student enrolled in a department which has an active Alpha Sigma Mu Chapter. It is intended that the scholarship provide financial support for the recipient's senior year. Candidates for the scholarship need not be Alpha Sigma Mu members; however, their academic performance, integrity, initiative and leadership skills should be appropriate to election to membership during their senior year. Each active Alpha Sigma Mu Chapter is entitled to nominate one candidate for the scholarship. An active chapter is one which has nominated and initiated new members during the preceding year (September through August) and has filed an Active Chapter Information Sheet for the year with the Secretary of Alpha Sigma Mu prior to June 1. At the chapter level, selection of a candidate is to be made by the chapter faculty advisor and/or the faculty of the department with the endorsement of the chapter. Chapter endorsement shall be by the signatures of the chapter President, Secretary and Faculty Advisor. The eligibility of a candidate is to be based upon academic performance in all university and college course work and upon integrity and leadership. With regard to academic performance, the candidate should have the highest academic standing among the juniors in the department and a minimum grade point average of at least 3.5/4.0 for all college and university course work. The candidate's integrity, initiative and leadership skills shall be attested to by three letters of recommendation from faculty members in the student's major department, excluding the chapter faculty advisor. By action of the Alpha Sigma Mu Board of Trustees in October 1984, the Society is offering an annual scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a student of junior-year standing enrolled in Materials Science and Engineering or related academic program as defined by the Constitution of Alpha Sigma Mu. By action of the Board, the amount of the scholarship was raised to $ 1,500 beginning in 1994. Nominations are to be submitted to: Alpha Sigma Mu Scholarship Selection Committee The Scholarship Recommendation Form is available online in PDF format. The deadline for the receipt of the nominations is June 1. Nominations received after the deadline or from chapters which do not meet the criteria for active chapter status will not be considered. Incomplete application packages will not be considered. Announcements of the scholarship award will be made prior to the Annual Meeting of the Society. A check in the amount of $1,500.00, made payable to the recipient of the scholarship, will be presented at the Annual Meeting or sent to the chapter faculty advisor, who, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, will present it to the recipient. |
